Are Bananas Berries – Let’s Find Out.

When you hear the word “berry,” what comes to mind? Strawberries? Blueberries? Blackberries? You may surprise to learn that bananas also considered a berry—at least according to botanists! In this blog post, we’ll explore why bananas are classified as a berry and what other fruits belong in this category.

The Definition of a Berry

Botanically speaking, a berry is defined as a fleshy fruit produced from a single ovary of an individual flower. This means that strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries are all berries because they have seeds on the inside and come from one flower each. Even though they look nothing like traditional berries, bananas fit into this definition too since they come from flowers with just one ovary and contain small seeds hidden within the fruit itself.

Other Fruits Considered Berries

Bananas aren’t the only seemingly unconventional fruits that are classed as berries – cucumbers, tomatoes, and avocados are also in the same family! These fruits come from plants with multiple ovaries in one flower (known as syncarpous ovaries) which makes them technically ‘false berries’ or ‘accessory fruits’. Other examples include peppers, pumpkins, squash, eggplants, kiwis and watermelons.
