Mirin

Mirin is an essential ingredient in Japanese cooking. It adds a unique flavor to dishes like sushi and tempura. a sweet, light rice wine for centuries in Japan. Made by steeping rice in water mixed with sugar and salt.

Here’s how to make it at home.
To make mirin, combine 1 cup of white rice with 2 cups of water in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low and simmer until the liquid is absorbed, about 20 minutes. Additionally, remove pan from heat and let stand 5 minutes. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl. Let cool completely before using. Store in a tightly sealed container in the refrigerator up to 6 months.

Ingredients.
You will need:

  • 1 cup of mirin (Japanese rice wine)
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of sake

Method
In brief, to make the mirin, combine with the sugar and sake in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly until the sugar dissolves. Remove the pan from heat and let cool completely before using.
