Sebago Potatoes

Today, they are grown on over 100 farms across Maine and New Hampshire. They are a type of potato that originated in Sebago Lake, Maine. Known for their firm texture and sweet flavor.

Where did they come from?
In 1835, John W. Sebago was born into a farming family in Sebago Lake, ME. He grew up helping his father with the farm work and learned how to make good use of the land. By the age of 20, he had saved enough money to buy a small piece of land near the lake. Over the next few years, he planted potatoes, corn, and other crops.

Why named after Sebago Lake?
In 1839, were first sold at the Boston Tea Party. They became so popular that people began calling them “Sebago Potatoes” instead of just “potatoes.”
