Kiwifruit article

Kiwifruit is native to New Zealand, where it was first cultivated in

Where did it come from?

The kiwifruit originated in China, where it has been grown since ancient times. It was brought to New Zealand by European settlers in 1856.

Why does it grow so high up?

Kiwifruits grow on tall, spindly trees because they need lots of sunlight to thrive. They also require a lot of water to produce large fruits. In fact, each tree needs at least 2 gallons (7.6 liters) of water per day.

What makes it taste so good?

Kiwifruits are packed with vitamin C, potassium, fiber, and other nutrients. They also contain a compound called limonin, which gives them their distinctive flavor. Kiwifruits are often used as an ingredient in smoothies and desserts.

How many varieties are there?

There are two main species of kiwifruit: Actinidia chinensis (Chinese) and Actinidia deliciosa (Hawaiian). Both are native to China and Japan, where they were first cultivated thousands of years ago. In recent decades, New Zealand has become one of the world’s largest producers of kiwifruit.

Which one should I buy?

If you’re looking for a sweet treat, then go with the Chinese variety. They tend to be sweeter than the Hawaiian ones. However, both varieties are good sources of vitamin C, fiber, potassium, folate, and manganese.
