Turnip article

Turnips are a root vegetable that has been cultivated for thousands of years. They’re often used in Asian cuisines, where they’re known as “winter radish.”

Here’s how to get started growing them at home.

You’ll need a few things before you start growing turnips. First, you’ll need a garden bed with good soil. Next, you’ll need seeds. If you buy seeds, make sure you choose ones that are specifically labeled for growing turnips. Then, plant your seeds in early spring. After the plants sprout, thin them out so that only one or two seedlings remain per square foot. Water regularly until the roots begin to show. Once the roots are large enough, you can dig them up and store them in the refrigerator for use later in the year.

Choose the Right Variety.

There are several varieties of turnip available. The most common type is called “turnip greens.” It’s a small, round root vegetable that tastes similar to radishes. Other varieties include “white turnips,” which are white at maturity; “red turnips,” which are red; and “yellow turnips,” which are yellow. All turnips should be stored in the refrigerator after harvesting.

Plant in Early Spring.

You can plant turnips in early spring, just before the last frost date. If you live in an area with mild winters, you can plant them as soon as the ground thaws. To prepare the soil, dig a hole twice as wide as the roots and three times as deep. Add some compost or manure to help improve the soil quality. Place the turnip seeds in the center of the hole and cover them with dirt. Water thoroughly. Keep the plants well watered until they sprout leaves. Then water only enough to keep the soil moist.

Water Well.

Once the seedlings start growing, give them plenty of sunlight. As the weather warms up, move the plants into a shaded spot. Continue watering every day until the first true leaf appears. After that, water once a week.

Harvest When Ready.

You can harvest turnip greens at any point during growth. Just pull off the leaves as needed. If you wait too long, the roots will become woody and tough.
