This blog post will answer all these questions and more, so that the next time you encounter edamame beans in the store, you’ll know just what to do with them.

What Are They?

These beans are immature soybeans that have been harvested before they can ripen. They’re green, plump and encased in a thin pod. They’re usually eaten either boiled or steamed and then seasoned with salt or other spices. The texture is similar to that of a lima bean, but with a slightly nuttier flavor.

Where Do They Come From?

They come from East Asia, where they have been cultivated for centuries. In fact, the word “edamame” comes from two Japanese words – “eda,” meaning stem or branch; and “mame,” meaning bean. Today, China is the world’s largest producer of edamame bean, supplying nearly 70% of the global market. However, found in Asian markets worldwide as well as in some large grocery stores in the United States.

How To Prepare Them?

When purchasing, in their pods look for ones that are bright green and plump all around. The pods should be firm enough to snap when bent gently with your fingers. When you get home, wash them thoroughly before cooking. Boiling is the easiest way to prepare them – simply add a teaspoon of salt per liter of boiling water and boil for five minutes before draining off any excess liquid. Alternatively, you can steam them by adding 1/2 cup of water to a pot and bringing it to a boil before adding them and covering for five minutes until tender but still crunchy. Finally, season with salt or other spices such as garlic powder or chili flakes before serving!
