Honey Comb

Honey is made by bees when they collect nectar from flowers. The process involves the bees collecting nectar in their mouths, then using their mandibles (mouthparts) to chew on the flower petals. This creates a sticky substance called propolis that hardens into a protective barrier around the hive.

Start with a clean surface.
If you want to make your own honey comb, start with a clean surface. A wooden cutting board works well because it’s sturdy enough to hold up to the rigors of beekeeping.

Cut out a piece of cardboard or plastic.
Next, cut out a square shape using a sharp knife. This will be the bottom of the hive box.

Place the cardboard or plastic over the top of the hive.
Now place the frame into the hive box. It should fit snugly inside the box.

Remove the cardboard or plastic when the comb has formed.
Once the comb has been made, remove the cardboard or plastic and place it in a warm area where it will dry out. This process takes anywhere from one day to two weeks.

Clean up any wax residue.
Finally, after the comb has dried, use a razor blade to scrape off any remaining wax. If you find that some of the cells are too small, you can cut them open with scissors.
