Mistletoe – Everything to Know

If you’ve ever been caught under the mistletoe, then you’re familiar with the customs surrounding this festive plant. But do you know where it comes from and why it has become so popular during the holiday season? Read on to learn more about what it is and how to properly care for it in your home.

What Is Mistletoe?

Mistletoe is an evergreen plant that is native to Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. It grows on deciduous trees such as apple, lime, hawthorn, poplar, and willow. In the wild, can be found atop branches or even hanging from tree trunks. The plant gets its name from the Anglo-Saxon words “mistel” (which means dung) and “tan” (which means twig), referring to one of its most common methods of propagation.

There are many species of mistletoe, but only a few have medicinal value. These include American Mistletoe (Phoradendron serotinum), Dwarf Mistletoe (Arceuthobium pusillum), European Mistletoe (Viscum album), and Oak Mistletoe (Phoradendron leucarpum). Each species has its own unique properties that make them useful for different purposes. For example, American mistletoe is used for treating high blood pressure while European mistletoe is used for treating cancer patients.

How To Care For Your Plant

Caring for your mistletoe plant not complicated; however, there are a few things to keep in mind if you want it to thrive. First of all, make sure that your plant receives plenty of sunlight each day – at least 6 hours a day should suffice. Secondly, water your plant regularly – you don’t want it to dry out! Lastly, prune regularly to keep its shape nice and neat. This will also help prevent any diseases or pests from attacking your plant.
Mistletoes need well-drained soil with plenty of organic matter added in order to survive and flourish over time. They prefer acidic soil with an ideal pH range between 5 and 6 . Adding compost or manure around the base of the plants can help improve drainage as well as provide additional nutrients for healthier growth. You can also add mulch around the base of the plants in order to retain moisture and reduce weeds.

Conclusion:

Mistletoes are beautiful plants that bring joy every holiday season when they appear in stores across the country. Not only do they bring cheerfulness into our homes but they also have medicinal properties which make them valuable both medically and spiritually too! Proper care must taken when growing these plants though – they need plenty of sunlight, regular watering, good drainage, nutrient-rich soil, mulch, and occasional pruning.
