Learn how to grow oregano from seed indoors or outdoors.

Growing oregano from seed is easy and fun! You can start seeds indoors or plant them directly into the garden. If you plan to grow oregano outside, make sure you choose an area with full sun exposure. To help your plants thrive, add some compost to the soil before planting.

Start with seeds.

It’s easiest to start seeds indoors. Choose a sunny window and place a tray filled with potting mix under a fluorescent light. Keep the lights on for 16 hours per day. After two weeks, remove the lights and continue growing the plants in darkness until they sprout roots. Then transplant the seedlings outdoors when the weather warms up.

Prepare soil.

If you live in an area where winters are cold, plant oregano in fall. In warmer areas, sow seeds in spring. To prepare the soil, add compost and organic fertilizer to the planting hole. Add water and wait for the soil to dry out before adding more fertilizer.

Water regularly.

Water plants frequently during the growing season. Plants need at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water per week, especially when temperatures drop below 50°F (10°C). During hot weather, keep the soil moist by watering daily.

Grow in full sun.

If you live in an area with cold winters, plant oregano in a sunny location where it will receive some protection from wind and snow. It needs a well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
